Publishers’ Bindings from the
Wade Hall Collection of Southern History and Culture
 The
Wade Hall Collection of Southern History and Culture is
an extensive collection of materials housed at the W.S.
Hoole Special Collections Library at the University of
Alabama.
Dr.
Wade Hall, a native of
Union Springs, Alabama, and a retired professor of English
at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky, has given
the University Libraries at the University of Alabama several
extensive gifts, including books, sheet music, sound recordings,
and photographs.
In selecting specific titles for inclusion in the Publishers'
Bindings Online project, we have found that the Wade Hall
Collection of Southern History and Culture had much to
offer in the
realm of publishers' bindings. We included well over 1,000
titles from the Wade Hall Collection because of their beauty,
uniqueness, condition, and because they support and represent
one of the greatest strengths in the University of Alabama's
contribution to the PBO project -- that being materials
relating to the Southern United States.
One of Dr. Hall's objectives
in collecting the works included in his collection at the
University of Alabama, was to obtain at least one book
autographed
by all the
significant Southern writers, past and present. The
strengths of Wade Hall Collection of Southern History and
Culture include signed first editions
written by Southern
authors,
as well
as
numerous
titles
that capture aspects of Southern history, culture, and
literature. Users will find that many of these titles focus
on the state of Kentucky, the place Dr. Hall has
called home for several decades.
On learning of the PBO project
and the inclusion of his materials in the collection, Dr.
Hall expressed the following -- "I am delighted with
the many dimensions being discovered in my collections
by the
faculty
of the
library,
as well as the students, scholars and historians who are
